Acupuncture Q & A
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a centuries-old healing technique from traditional Chinese medicine that’s become increasingly popular in modern Western health practices. This technique aims to restore and maintain health by stimulating specific points on your body.
How Does Acupuncture Work?
According to traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture works by balancing the flow of life force (qi) along energy pathways called meridians. The meridians run along your body. Your acupuncturist at Health Atlast may stimulate certain meridian points by inserting very fine, sterile needles through the top layers of your skin.
Because the needles are so thin, most people don’t experience discomfort during acupuncture. If needles make you nervous, the compassionate providers at Health Atlast can accommodate your needs. They offer treatment without needles, including:
- Cupping
- Tuina massage
- Acupressure
- Infrared light therapy
The team at Health Atlast offers comprehensive, holistic care that’s tailored to your specific needs.
What Does an Acupuncturist Treat?
There’s been extensive research on the benefits of acupuncture for treating a wide range of conditions, including:
- Low back pain
- Neck pain
- Tension headaches
- Migraines
- Knee pain
- Arthritis pain
The team at Health Atlast also uses acupuncture to treat menstrual cramps, allergies, and nausea and vomiting that may result from medical treatments like chemotherapy.
Even if you don’t have a medical condition that requires treatment, acupuncture may help you relieve stress and muscle tension, promote better sleep, and improve your energy throughout the day.
What Should I Expect from an Acupuncture Treatment?
First, your licensed acupuncturist at Health Atlast carefully reviews your symptoms, lifestyle habits, and medical history. They may also examine the following:
- Rhythm and strength of the pulse in your wrist
- Areas of your body where you feel pain
- Shape and color of your tongue
- Color of your face
Your first visit may last up to an hour, while subsequent visits may be closer to 30 minutes. The number and frequency of acupuncture treatments depend on the type and severity of your condition. Most people benefit from 1-2 treatments per week.
It’s helpful to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to your appointment so your acupuncturist can access your energy points. During treatment, you lay on a comfortable table while your acupuncturist gently presses on strategic points on your body. If using needles, they let you know when and where they insert them. Then, you relax for 10-20 minutes while the treatment takes effect.
