Prolotherapy Q & A
What is Prolotherapy?
Prolotherapy is a procedure that triggers your body’s natural inflammation response to promote healing. This technique involves injecting the painful area with a mildly irritating substance, usually a sugar solution mixed with the numbing agent lidocaine.
When your provider at Health Atlast injects the solution into an area of injury or tissue damage, it causes temporary, low-grade inflammation. This reactivates your body’s natural healing process and repairs injured soft tissues.
What Does Prolotherapy Treat?
You can get prolotherapy in many joints, including your hips, knees, and shoulders - as well as your back.
The team at Health Atlast uses prolotherapy to treat many causes of pain, including:
- Degenerative disc disease
- Osteoarthritis
- Meniscus tears in the knee
- Tennis or golfer’s elbow
- Rotator cuff tears
- Ankle pain and instability
Some areas may be more difficult to treat than others. If prolotherapy isn’t the best treatment for your joint pain, the team at Health Atlast may recommend another type of joint injection.
How does prolotherapy work?
Prolotherapy stimulates your body’s healing response with a mild irritant like sugar solution. The irritant causes a low level of inflammation, which tricks your body into thinking you have an injury that needs repair.
Once the healing process begins, your body begins to strengthen and repair damaged tissues with healthy new cells. Over time, this leads to stronger and more stable joints as well as a decrease in pain.
What Should I Expect from Prolotherapy?
First, your provider at Health Atlast carefully reviews your symptoms and medical history and performs a physical exam to make sure prolotherapy is right for you. Then, they create a personalized treatment plan to relieve your joint pain without drugs or invasive procedures.
Depending on your needs, the team at Health Atlast may recommend prolotherapy alone or in combination with another treatment such as:
- Chiropractic care
- Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy
- Osteopathic manipulation
- Massage therapy
- Acupuncture
Most people need a series of 3-6 prolotherapy injections spaced 2-4 weeks apart. Your provider lets you know how many treatments would be best for you.
As world leaders in multidisciplinary health care, the team at Health Atlast works with you to ensure optimal health and pain relief. To find out if prolotherapy should be part of your holistic health plan, call or book an appointment online today.
