Cupping Q & A
What is Cupping?
Cupping is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that uses cups to create a vacuum on your skin. The skilled acupuncturists place heated cups on certain points of your skin, creating a suction that can increase blood circulation to that area.
The purpose of cupping in ancient Chinese medicine is to enhance the flow of qi, or life force, rebalancing the positive and negative energy — yin and yang — in the body. By renewing this balance, cupping increases your resistance to harmful toxins, while enhancing blood flow and easing or eliminating pain.
What Conditions Can Cupping Treat?
In many cases, cupping is a suitable treatment to ease everyday aches and pains in your muscles.
When applied to certain acupressure points around your body, your Health Atlast provider can also use cupping to address issues like:
- Arthritis
- Skin conditions
- Herniated discs
- Digestive dysfunction
During your initial consultation, your Health Atlast provider can determine if cupping is an option to treat your pain and other symptoms after an evaluation of your skin and a review of your medical history and current health.
You might not be a good candidate for cupping if you take blood thinners or if you have an active skin condition like an infection or open wound.
What Can I Expect During a Cupping Session?
To create suction within the cup, your Health Atlast practitioner first heats the cup before placing it open side down on your skin. The air inside the cup quickly cools, creating a vacuum that draws your skin and muscle up into the cup.
Cups are typically left in place for up to 10 minutes before your provider removes them. In some cases, your Health Atlast provider performs cupping in combination with acupuncture.
Does Cupping Cause Side Effects?
Following a cupping session, it’s common to feel a little lightheaded or dizzy. Your skin will also show redness and mild inflammation in the areas where your provider placed the cups. These marks will go away in a few days without additional treatment.
Your provider could recommend additional cupping or acupuncture based on your overall health and the success of your initial cupping treatment.
